Diego Maradona has axed a number of international veterans from Argentina's squad, including centre-backs Gabriel Milito (Barcelona) and Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), midfielder Fernando Gago (Real Madrid), winger Jose Sosa (Estudiantes) and forward Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli). He had already made some surprising omissions when he left out midfielder Esteban Cambiasso and full-back Javier Zanetti (both of Inter Milan) from his 30-man squad.
Nigerian striker victor Anichebe (Everton) was the final casualty from his team's roster cut while midfielder Grigoris Makos (AEK Athens) and defender Giorgos Tzavelas (Panionios) failed to make the final 23 in Greece's squad.
South Korea coach Huh Jung-Moo is another one gambling on a star stirker being fit in time, as he waits on Lee Dong-Guk (Jeonbuk), who has a thigh injury. Defender Shin Hyung-Min (Pohang Steelers), midfielder Koo Ja-Cheol (Jeju Utd) and forward Lee Keun-Ho (Júbilo Iwata) miss out.
