Absentees from Group G

When influential playmaker Ronaldinho (AC Milan) doesn't even make the 23-man Brazil squad, there are going to be some notable names left at home. Other casualties of coach Dunga's axe included midfielders Carlos Eduardo (Hoffenheim) and Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos), striker Diego Tardelli (Atlético Mineiro), defenders Sandro (Internacional) and Alex (Chelsea) and utility player Marcelo (Real Madrid).

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz's decision to cut defender Ze Castro (Deportivo la Coruna) is a high risk strategy as he sweats it out hoping that Pepe (Real Madrid) will be fit. Similarly, he picked relatively inexperienced goalkeepers in Beto (Porto) and Daniel Fernandes (Iraklis) over Quim (Benfica) and Hilario (Chelsea).

Ivory coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson took a defensive step in the group of death (Group G) by dropping two strikers Bakary Kone (Lekhwiya) and Kanga Akale (Lens). Midfielders Emerse Fae (Nice), Gilles Yapi Yapo (Young Boys) and Traore Lacina (Cluj), defender Abdoulaye Meite (West Brom) and goalkeeper Vincent Angban (Asec Mimosas) also failed to make the grade.

Difficult to know who was in the frame in the North Korea squad as this was announced about three weeks ago.
