Sick note for Ferdinand

It had to happen - just as the deadline passes for the final 23-man squad, the England captain gets crocked in training.

Sky Sports has reported that Rio Ferdinand picked up an injury to his knee at the Rustenberg training facility and was wisked away to hospital for a scan. The early diagnosis is knee ligament damage.

Centre-back Michael Dawson (Tottenham) has been put on standby and the captain's armband has been given to Steven Gerrard.
