In Group A, the shock exclusion of Mexico midfielder Jonathan dos Santos (Barcelona), has prompted his brother Giovani (Tottenham), who did make the squad, to threaten to boycott the tournament.
Hosts South Africa have left out record goalscorer Benni McCarthy (West Ham) over fears for his fitness ahead of the tournament. Other surprise ommisions were goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez (Bielefeld) and defender Bryce Moon (POAK).
With defender william Gallas (Arsenal) passed fit, France have instead dropped midfielder Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid), who was suffering from a stomach injury.
Uruguay have left out midfielder Jorge Rodriguez River Plate) and winger Alvaro Gonzalez (Nacional).
