Survival of the fittest

Warm-up is the right word for England as the team suffered in the heat and altitude in their 3-0 win over the Platinum Stars, with Wayne Rooney losing his cool and James Milner missing training today with a temperature.

Other players are struggling to make England's first tournament match against the USA: Shaun Wright-Phillips suffered a knock to his knee in the friendly match while goalkeeper David James is struggling with a knee injury and midfielder Gareth Barry has ruled himself out with an ankle injury.

Other influential players sweating on the opening matches include Italy's Andrea Pirlo (calf strain), Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba (recovering from a broken arm), Netherlands' Arjen Robben (hamstring), Australia's Tim Cahill (neck injury) and playmaker Andres Iniesta who limped out of Spain's 6-0 demolition of Poland.

High profile names who have recently withdrawn from the tournament include John Obi Mikel (Chelsea) of Nigeria (knee injury) and Portugal's Nani (Manchester Utd) who injured his collarbone after attempting an overhead kick in training.
